Yamhill County was one of the first districts in Oregon, and was officially named Yamhill in 1845- stemming from the Indian tribe ‘Yamhelas’.

Yamhill County was one of the first districts in Oregon and was officially named Yamhill in 1845, stemming from the Indian tribe ‘Yamhelas’. Most of the American immigrants who came over the Oregon Trail during 1843-1844 settled in Yamhill, which quickly became the agricultural center of the Willamette Valley. Today, Yamhill County has a population of over 108,000, and is ranked the 6th largest agricultural producer with over 160,000 acres of farmland. It’s also the heart of Oregon’s wine industry and boasts over 50 member-wineries.

 

Yamhill County is a desirable area and its well-known towns include: McMinnville, Newburg, Dundee, Carlton, and Dayton. With agriculture being the main industry, you’ll find a vast landscape of farms and rolling hills dotted with quaint towns. Located just 45 minutes southwest of Portland and 10 minutes north of McMinnville, you’ll discover a variety of award-winning wineries and rolling terrain. You’ll also find quaint and historic lodging in the area such as: Blue Elk Ranch, and Yamhill Vineyards Bed and Breakfast. Yamhill County has a vast culinary scene from coffee shops, pizzarias, burger joints, to historical brew pubs and bakeries. Some of the local favorites include Carlton Bakery, Cuvee, Earth and Sea, and Martha’s Tacos and More.

 

The largest employer of Yamhill County is the McMinnville school district with over 800 employees. McMinnville School District is the #4 ranked county school district in Oregon. It comprises of six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school with a total enrollment of around 6,800 and is the largest district in Yamhill County. 

 

The median income for Yamhill County is $67,000, the median house price is $500,000, the median price per square foot is $288, and the median population is 150 people per square mile. The average commute to Portland is about an hour, and about 30 minutes to Hillsboro.
